Cooking 1.0.1: Thomas Kellers "Spanglish" Sandwich (Day 20)

Anyone who has seen the movie "Spanglish" is familiar with the delicious creation Adam Sandlar makes late one night when he cant sleep. The sandwich caused such a stir that is is actually featured as art on the front of the DVD. Turns out the movie producers actually sought out chef Thomas Keller to create what they believed to be the "best sandwich in the world" for the movie. I quickly looked up the recipe (Which can be seen here) and set out to recreate it. I made some slight variations to the original by subbing out eggs for egg whites, butter lettuce for arugula, and mayo for sriracha. Yum!

Ingredients

  • Two slices rustic bread, toasted
  • Shredded cheddar jack cheese
  • Three egg whites, fried
  • Tab of butter
  • Sliced cherry tomatoes
  • Two slices bacon
  • Handful of arugula
  • Salt, pepper, and sriracha
Preparation

  • Heat butter in a skillet and cook the bacon till crispy. Place on a paper towel to drain
  • In the same skillet heat a tad more butter and crack three egg whites into the pan letting them form a uniform layer.
  • As the eggs are cooking toast your bread
  • Right before the egg whites are done "frying" top them with a good amount of shredded cheddar. Turn off heat and let the cheese continue to melt
  • When eggs are finished, place on one side of the toasted bread and top with sriracha. Add the bacon.
  • On the other side of the bread, add arugula and tomatoes  Add salt and pepper to the tomatoes and assemble sandwich. Eat and enjoy!
